The Heaton Group Wigan Community Projects

The Heaton Group In The Community

For three generations The Heaton group have been developing projects within the local community in Wigan that have helped restore and maintain the town's rich heritage. Not only have we been dedicated to preserving the history of the city, we have been helping its people become more prosperous and improved the quality of accommodation available.

The Victoria Hotel

Situated in the heart of the city, The Victoria Hotel, a grade II listed building, was once the social hub of Wigan town centre. Unfortunately, the building has been vacant for many years and so is in need of immediate renovation.

Working closely with Wigan’s Heritage committee and backed by the local council, we have decided to take on this iconic building and spend the necessary time and effort required to restore the building back to a sound high-quality state.

Once completed, the development will offer 12 high spec contemporary apartments with full disabled access and lifts. On the ground floor, there will be commercial units for local businesses to benefit from the thriving central location.

All of the work will be carried out by local businesses in order to benefit the local community further.

Local Partnerships

Creating partnerships within the local community has helped us on our mission to support our town.

We work closely with a number of charities, included The Brick Homeless Shelter, based in the centre of Wigan.

The Brick have been helping disadvantaged and homeless people throughout the borough since July 2008. The project was initially set up by Queens Hall Methodist Mission and provides a day centre for homeless and disadvantaged members of our society.

Louise Green, Spokesperson for The Brick said, “At The Brick we help people with complex backgrounds find suitable dwellings that aid reintegration to society. We have been working with the Heaton Group’s rental department- Local Lettings to house those in need since July 2011. The Heaton Group offers homes to our clients where other landlords have refused, due to the complexity of their backgrounds. They have also provided excellent standards of living at a significantly reduced rental cost. The Brick and The Heaton Group have formed a great partnership that communicates with and supports those in need within the local community of Wigan.”

We have also successfully created 12 purpose-built residential properties for tenants with special needs and/or learning difficulties. The buildings provide a safe and secure environment that enables the tenants to gain independence and aid integration back into the local community.

Currently, we are finalising a further project with help from the local authorities, to provide two more bespoke properties, which will help provide more high-quality residential accommodation for The Brick Homeless Project.

Bridgeman House

The latest development the group is planning to embark upon is Bridgeman house.
This project is very much in its infancy, yet the community lies at the heart of the development.

Once a tax office, situated in a key location overlooking Mesnes Park in Wigan town centre, Bridgeman House has been derelict for many years and is in desperate need of some TLC.

Completing these projects has only been possible with the relentless hard work and commitment not only from our office-based staff at Local Lettings, but also from the Wigan based contractors we employed to work on these projects. We have provided long-term sustainable work to our contractors through perpetual improvement and modernisation of properties in the Wigan area. We have successfully provided employment to over 150 local tradesmen and continue to build upon this with each new development.
